FAS American White Oak Skirting
American Oak is an exceptional joinery timber thanks to its high strength, stability and workability. Typically compared to its European cousin (predominantly Quercus Robur), American white oak is often favoured for internal use as it featuring a more gentle grain and lighter colours. It is also often more cost effective despite being the same genus species and actually features a higher Janka hardness making it more scuff resistant.
Oak is very popular in the UK for joinery as it strikes an excellent balance between value and performance. Internally, oak has been known to last over 50 years with the right maintenance and looks sublime throughout.
Key Features
- Workability: Whilst its strength means it has a slight blunting effect on tools, American White Oak is stable, durable and strong when machined.
- Aesthetics: Offered in FAS grade, there will be very little knots and low levels of sapwood in your skirting.
- Durability: Classed as moderately durable which when properly maintained can reach a service life of well over 50 years internally.
- Affordability: American Oak Skirting gets you the sought after aspects as the Quercus genus whilst being more cost effective than European Oak.
- Strength: With a Janka hardness of 1,360 lbf, American white oak is very scuff and mark resistant, even moreso than its European cousin at 1,120 lbf.

Sustainability
Oak is a ubiquitous timber species with a global presence spread over several continents. The oaks of North America (quercus alba) are typically sourced from generationally owned small forests felling only their mature trees. This creates a more natural harvesting process as opposed to large forestry management operations which require more invasive management techniques. The results being a more consistent quality and performance as there is less likely to be a large disparity between planks produced from young and mature trees.Care and Maintenance
Oak is commonly surface treated with a sealant to prevent moisture absorption and UV bleaching however it is not necessary to extend its lifespan due to its naturally high durability. Dust regularly and a simple wipe down with a gentle non-abrasive cleaning product will suffice for maintenance. Then recomend this page to a friend today!
