Articles: Green and Air Dried Oak Posts
We are supplier of both green and air dried oak posts which are ideal for use in construction. Both air dried and green oak have their uses despite being at different stages of the oak’s lifecycle.
So, what’s the difference between green and air dried Oak?
Green or fresh sawn oak is cut straight from the log and is supplied without having time to dry. This means that your oak posts will move and shrink more as the timber dries out over time. This leads to surface cracks and checks. It’s important to realise that these will not harm the structural integrity of the timber.
Air dried, however, is supplied having already had time to dry out over a 2-5 year period. It will still move because it’s not totally dry, but the change won’t be as drastic.
You can order the exact post sizes you need and then cut them down on site (for beams and posts we don’t cross cut to length so they will be supplied over length). Most of our beams are supplied sawn to size however for Oak you can ask to have them planed. Planed Posts will have a smoother surface finish.
