Product Description

FAS American Tulipwood Architrave

American Tulipwood, sometimes referred to as poplar, is a lightweight hardwood ideal for joinery and woodworking applications. It takes paint, stains and polishes well and thanks to its low Janka hardness, Tulipwood has exceptional workability for mouldings.

As a base timber for painted joinery, Tulipwood is highly favoured in the trade, it’s minimal woodgrain allow it to take paint very well, it is stable with regard to moisture movement and has a fine and even texture.

Despite being referred to poplar in the US, Tulipwood (Liriodendron tulipifera) is not technically a poplar but has a very similar resemblance to the poplar tree and is a member of the magnolia family.

Key Features

  • Workability:At a modest weight of 490 kg/m3, and a Janka hardness of 540 lbf, Tulipwood is very easy to work with.
  • Dimensionally Stable:Stability with internal joinery is important, it ensures your quality finished architrave has minimal movement in situ. Tulipwood is very stable and supplied kiln dried for further stability.
  • Premium aesthetic:There are typically little to no knots featured in Tulipwood giving finished joinery a clean and modern aesthetic.
  • Versatility:Tulipwood turns, glues and machines well allowing it to be used in a variety of projects such as furniture making, panelling, kitchen cabinetry, wood carving, door manufacturing and engineered floor backing.

Application and Design Ideas

Tulipwood works well in virtually every space on account of its flexibility with finish, stain or paint to suit existing décor or leave untreated with its low knot content for a modern look. We machine to any profile but our standard architrave profiles are as below:

IWA1 – Pencil Rounded: Simple stands out! This profile has one rounded top edge.

IWA2 – Torus: Features a subtle rounded half-circle along the top edge.

IWA3 – Ogee: This popular architrave profile is a more ornate option with a unique slope and curve.

IWA4 – Chamfered: Machined with an angled top edge for a sleek look.

IWA5 – Lambs Tongue: Featuring a slight curved edge at the end of the board creating a subtle step.

Sustainability

Tulipwood is not listed in the IUCN list of threatened species nor the CITES appendices. Native to North America, it is an abundant species with excellent forestry management to ensure it remains a consistent utility hardwood.

Care and Maintenance

Typically only used internally due to its lack of resistance to decay and difficulty with preservative treatment. Apply a surface finish such as oil, lacquer, stain or paint to protect the timber from stains, scratches and moisture movement.

Cleaning is straight forward as with many timbers, a light dusting will keep your tulipwood architrave looking fresh and a soap and warm water mix is plenty for a more deep clean. Do not use harsh chemicals or cleaners. Top up finishes periodically and if required lightly sand the finish back and reapply for a more durable coating.
